Standards are essential with most things, there are right and wrong ways to do things and leading the way with Australian standards is a non-profit organisation called Standards Australia, which is dedicated to providing standards for a wide range of sectors.
The following industries use Australian standards.
- Mining – The mining industry is all about safety and Australia is one of the world’s largest producers of natural resources. There are hundreds of thousands of Australians employed in the mining industry and standards are developed over time; a mining company might have a specific need for a standard, which would be designed by a team of experts.

- Education & training services – Education generates $15 billion per year in exports for Australia, which is a considerable amount. The goals are to improve access, quality and reliability of education services. - Manufacturing & processing – Manufacturing is currently responsible for about 6% of the GDP, with over a $100 billion export sector, with more than 830,000 employees. - Energy – The energy industry is huge, largely due to the high level of natural resources here in Australia, the energy transmission infrastructure needs standards, as do the installation of systems and appliances. Safety is obviously a major concern, while efforts to increase clean energy and providing standards for electrical installation are ongoing.
- Health & community – The Universal Healthcare System services more than 25million Australians and employs over 800,000; as you would expect, there are many standards required across the healthcare and community service sectors. Healthcare providers can directly purchase standards or have them designed from the ground up.
- Consumer products, safety & services – Consumer product standards are directly related to personal safety, which is always a key priority.
